Actually, I'm liking my 30s...I've been blessed with a great life, a job I love, a wonderful group of friends, and a firm sense of wonder at the whole thing. Let's face it, though...I'm not exactly the person you would vote Most Likely to Train for a Marathon. Yes, you read that correctly. Sewgeeky, Couch Potato to the Stars, is pulling herself away from her computer and her sewing machine to get ready to walk the Honolulu Marathon on December 10! No one is as surprised as I am, but when something seems right, I've learned not to fight it! Well, ok, I'm in the process of learning not to fight it... I'm motivated by several things; certainly one of them is that I need to get outside and work my body a bit, since the Silicon Valley lifestyle keeps me penned in my cube a bit too much. I could get a workout without having a goal as lofty as a marathon, though. My true motivation is that, while I'm getting firmer thighs, I'll be raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
I'm walking for the kids and adults whose lives have been turned upside down by this disease, and I'm walking in the hope that, in the future, there won't be so many of them. I don't want the lives of Sarah and MacKenzie (The World's Cutest Nieces) to ever be affected by Leukemia or Lymphoma. I don't want them to lose friends, or family members, or to have to go through treatment themselves. My new baby niece is due three days before the marathon, and I'd love to see Leukemia and Lymphoma completely eliminated by the time she is pestering her crazy aunt to make her a prom dress. There are thousands of people whose lives were saved by advances in the treatment of Leukemia and Lymphoma. The progress made in the fight against this disease over the past decade is amazing. Today, around 75% of children diagnosed with Leukemia can be cured. In the 70s, the survival rate was only 5%. However, it is still the #1 disease killer of children. There is so much good news in the fight against these types of Cancer. In order to go the distance and completely conquer this disease, we have to keep funding vital research. I'm doing my part by walking this marathon. Please do whatever you can to help. Click here to go to a secure (if really ugly) online donation form. Don't miss my Training Journal...it's like the Sewing Journal, but with pain. You'll love it! |
