Loose Ends and the City
Alright, so I tuned into the final episode of Sex and the City last night along with millions of other people. I've only ever watched a few episodes from start to finish during its six year run on HBO. From what I could tell they did a good job of tying up a lot of loose ends. Too many shows end long after they've jumped the shark, and their finale only helps to put viewers out of their misery.
I have read and heard all about the reasons why Sex and the City has been such a huge success. The excitement of living in New York City, the relationships between the characters, the window on the secret conversations of women, the fashion, and the shoes. Some of the show's trappings are obviously unrealistic on a certain level but the events in their lives are identifiable to just about anyone. Perhaps that is the ultimate allure of any great and lasting comedy or drama.
"Relationships don't fit perfectly. There are those that open you up to something real and exotic. Those that are old and familiar. Those that bring up lots of questions. Those that bring you somewhere unexpected. Those that bring you far from where you started. And those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself." - Carrie Bradshaw's final lines, Sex and the City
In the end, Sex and the City was still about the friendships between four women, but the big loose end was what would become of their much celebrated independence. As it turned out the resolution for each of them was to be independently dependent in a relationship that still allowed them to be themselves.
