The Garden

Verona MejorBefore you ask, What Garden? We want you to look at our plans. Originally there was an avenue with a ha-ha either side. Trees marched down the avenue shoulder to shoulder and thousands of daffodils grew in bunches along its sides. But one family upon leaving took up the bulbs and another cut down the trees and ploughed the avenue back into the field. We have a job on our hands.

Strasbourg accommodationThe plans are very clever - they divide the gardens into two immediate areas - a formal garden and lawns. Then, not marked on these plans, will be the organic gardens on the North West corner of the plot. How organic the gardens will be depends on how tenacious the creepie crawlies will be. The endless battle between man and the elements. However, the fresh produce will feed the house next year.

We have planted the beech hedge - the winter winds were a bit cruel and whipped the slender twigs into hollowed furrows which Mike is heeling back in - see the picture. We are told it will take between five and seven years to grow into any size of shelter, but we are proud of the buds already this Spring.

We have put in a new avenue and have saved granite floors from the house to use in the patio. The grass was sown and is starting to come up now - a bit patchy but Mike has already put it into stripes! This summer will see great advances made as we begin the task of planting the borders and beds.
